Concannon Is A Candidate for Mayor of Woburn

Woburn City Council President Mike Concannon of One Rose Farm Lane recently announced that he will be a candidate for Mayor of the City of Woburn in this fall’s municipal election. In his announcement, Concannon offered the following:

“It is with great pride that I announce that I am a candidate for Mayor of the City of Woburn. With your support and with the support of my amazing wife Annmarie and my 5 children, (P.J., John, Tim, Bob, and Katie), it is my goal to serve as the next Mayor of the city that I have called home for my entire life.

“I have given this decision much thought and I sincerely believe that it is time. It is time for me, both personally and professionally, to step up to offer to lead our community. I believe that my cumulative personal and professional life experiences, as well as my 10 years on the City Council, (serving as President the past 2 years), have prepared me to take the next step. I also believe that it is time for our city to move forward and for us to foster a more collaborative approach to city government.

“When I first ran for public office, I pledged to use my life experiences to bring a positive, respectful, and cooperative approach to addressing the issues facing our city…so that we could keep our city affordable, desirable, and safe. I am gratified and thankful for your previous support and I believe, (and I hope that you agree), that I’ve done what I said I would do. Therefore, I ask for your support once again as I try to bring that same professional approach to serving as your next Mayor.

“On a personal level, I am a lifelong Woburnite, a husband and father, a homeowner and taxpayer for 35 years and an involved member of our community for my whole adult life. I have been an active parent in our schools, a coach on our athletic fields, rinks, and courts as well as a member, Past President, and Melvin Jones Fellow in the Woburn Host Lions Club- where I helped to establish Lions Park at Horn Pond. I am personally committed to our community. On a professional level, I am a graduate of Woburn Memorial High School, the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, and Suffolk University Law School. I have been a member of the Massachusetts Bar since 1996. I am a retired Massachusetts State Police Major and a former Undersecretary of Public Safety for the Commonwealth. I also served as a college professor at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell for 10 years. I am currently a licensed attorney and a safety and compliance professional in the private sector.

“While serving on the City Council these past 10 years, in addition to currently serving as City Council President for almost 2 years, I have also served as the Chairman of the Finance Committee and as the Liaison to the School Committee as well as a member of the Ordinance Committee, Public Safety and License Committee, Personnel Committee, Audits and Accounts Committee, and the Traffic Commission. I am keenly aware of the important issues facing our city and I have developed strong relationships with our city’s department heads, administrators, and employees. I have great admiration for our city’s workforce and I pledge to always treat them with respect and dignity. With every vote that I have cast and with every action that I have taken while on the City Council, I have always been guided by what I felt was best for Woburn as a whole. I pledge that I will continue to do so and to do it respectfully and professionally. I promise that I will not let personalities or pettiness be a part of my decision making process; nor will I allow my ego to cloud my judgment.

“In all of my years of service to the Commonwealth and to our city, I have been and will continue to be guided by certain core beliefs. I believe in public service as a calling and in the spirit of the citizen representative (and not the career politician). I also believe in being extremely careful with the people’s money (and never forgetting that it is, in fact, the people’s money). Additionally, I believe in maintaining a low tax burden and a high level of city services, in fostering a strong sense of a welcoming community, in the undeniable value of education, in ensuring the safety of all of Woburn’s citizens, in a balanced approach to development, and in a respectful and supportive approach to leading our city’s workforce and conducting the people’s business.

“It has been said that ‘managers manage things, while leaders lead people’. The position of Mayor is all about leading people. I believe that simply managing to the bottom line is not enough. Leadership is what is needed for our city at this time and I believe strongly that I have demonstrated a track record of solid and successful leadership; during my 26 year career on the Massachusetts State Police, during my time working in the private sector, and during my time on the City Council. I hope to bring that leadership to the corner office at City Hall.

“In closing, I respectfully ask for your vote for Mayor in this fall’s election.
